Route Categories

Four ride types for every level

Each category is defined by terrain, distance range and expected group pace. Participants are encouraged to choose the category that reflects their current ability.

Introductory Rides

Flat or gently undulating routes between 20 and 35 km. These rides use maintained cycle paths and avoid high-traffic roads. Pace is relaxed, with planned breaks and a focus on group cohesion.

20–35 km 1–2 hours Up to 20 riders

Development Rides

Mixed terrain routes between 40 and 65 km with some elevation change. Designed for cyclists who ride regularly and are building endurance or expanding their route knowledge.

40–65 km 2–3.5 hours Up to 15 riders

Extended Distance Rides

Routes between 70 and 100 km for cyclists comfortable with longer outings. Planned rest stops, varied terrain and a maintained group pace throughout. Suitable for those with consistent weekly riding.

70–100 km 3.5–5 hours Up to 12 riders

Off-Road & Gravel Routes

Forest paths and gravel roads across national park areas near Helsinki. These rides require a suitable bicycle (gravel, hybrid or mountain bike). Distances range from 25 to 55 km depending on the route.

25–55 km 2–4 hours Gravel/MTB recommended

Safety Guidelines

What we ask of all participants

These guidelines apply to all rides regardless of category. They are designed to keep the group safe and ensure rides run smoothly for everyone.

Ask a Question
Helmet use is required on all rides. Participants without a properly fitting helmet will not be permitted to join the group departure.
Lights are required for early morning and evening rides. Front white and rear red lights must be fitted and functional before departure.
Arrive with a roadworthy bicycle. Coordinators may ask riders with unsafe equipment to wait until issues are resolved. Basic tools and a spare tube should be carried.
Signal all turns and hazards using standard hand signals. Coordinators will demonstrate these at the pre-ride briefing for new participants.
No rider is left behind. Groups stop at all designated points to allow all participants to maintain contact. Notify a coordinator if you need to withdraw during a ride.
Carry water and a small snack for rides over 40 km. Rest stops are scheduled but conditions may vary. Personal nutrition is the rider's responsibility.
Equipment Guidance

What to bring on a group ride

This list is provided as general informational guidance and is not exhaustive. Individual needs will vary depending on ride duration and personal preference.

Protective Gear

Helmet (required), gloves (recommended), and reflective clothing or accessories for low-light conditions.

Lighting

Front and rear lights are required for morning and evening departures. USB rechargeable lights are practical for regular use.

Repair Basics

A spare inner tube, tyre levers and a compact pump or CO₂ inflator cover most roadside situations. A multi-tool is also recommended.

Hydration

At minimum one water bottle for rides under 50 km; two for longer outings. Hydration packs are an option for gravel and extended rides.

Navigation

Route maps are provided at the pre-ride briefing. GPS units or a phone mount are personal preference. Offline maps are recommended for gravel routes.

Weather Layering

Finnish conditions vary significantly. A lightweight windproof layer can be packed easily and makes a significant difference on exposed routes.

Communication

A charged mobile phone is advised for all rides. Coordinator contact details are shared at the pre-ride briefing.

Personal First Aid

A small kit with plasters, antiseptic wipes and pain relief is recommended for extended outings. Coordinators carry a group first aid kit.

Common Questions

Ride-specific questions

How do I sign up for a specific ride?

Registered members can view and confirm attendance through their member account. First-time participants can attend a Saturday introductory ride without prior booking by arriving at the base by 09:50.

What if I cannot keep up with the group pace?

Groups stop at all planned rest points and no rider is left behind. If you find a route significantly more demanding than expected, inform the coordinator and they will arrange an appropriate option, including a shorter return route if available.

Are rides cancelled in wet weather?

Rain alone does not cancel a ride. Rides are cancelled or rerouted when conditions pose genuine safety concerns — for example, ice on path surfaces or severe storm warnings. Members receive notification via email as early as possible.

Can I suggest a new route?

Members are welcome to submit route suggestions through the contact page. Proposals are reviewed by coordinators for suitability, surface quality and safety before being trialled as an optional additional ride.
